Why People Attack What They Cannot Create
We admire creativity, but sometimes ridicule creative people. We admire intelligence, but may become uncomfortable around someone who challenges the group. We celebrate success, but success can also trigger comparison.
People do not respond only to what another person does. We also respond to what that person makes us feel about ourselves.
Another person's intelligence, creativity, discipline, confidence, or success can become a mirror. One person looks into that mirror and feels inspired. Another sees a threat.
That distinction matters.
There is a difference between saying, "I don't like the idea," and saying, "I don't like you for having the idea."
Criticism itself is not the enemy. A chef needs feedback. A writer needs an editor. A business owner needs customers willing to say what is not working. Constructive criticism can improve a creation. Destructive criticism attacks identity.
"This could be better" is different from "You shouldn't have tried."
Human beings care deeply about status and belonging. We compare ourselves with the people around us, and when someone rises in a way we cannot match, the discomfort can turn into resentment — and resentment, left unchecked, turns into attack.
